CINCINNATI — Trey Hendrickson, the standout defensive end for the Bengals, has asked for a trade permission for the second year in a row, and this time, the team is letting him explore his options.
In an announcement made through ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Hendrickson shared his gratitude for the chance to look for a new team, even though he has a year remaining on his contract. He expressed appreciation for having represented Cincinnati, saying, “It’s been an honor and a privilege to represent Cincinnati over the last four years. I love this city and organization.” He’s eager to see what opportunities await him.
At 30 years old, Hendrickson just completed a remarkable season. He led the NFL with 17.5 sacks in 2024, earning his place on the first-team All-Pro roster. Alongside wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, he became the first All-Pro selection for the Bengals since 2015. This marked his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl appearance, solidifying his status as one of the best in the game.
A couple of years ago, he signed a one-year extension to his original four-year, $60 million deal with Cincinnati. He’s set to earn $15.8 million in base salary for 2025, plus a $200,000 roster bonus, which brings his cap hit to $18.7 million.
Since joining the Bengals, Hendrickson has consistently ranked among the best pass rushers. He sits third overall in pressure rate and total sacks (57) since 2021, only behind Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt. Despite his impressive stats, his average annual salary ranks lower than expected among edge rushers.
Hendrickson isn’t the only Bengal eyeing a long-term contract this offseason. Ja’Marr Chase aims to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league, while Tee Higgins is also looking for a new deal after five seasons.
This development suggests that not all players will get their desired contracts, particularly since Higgins has already received the franchise tag for the second year in a row, though the Bengals still wish to lock him into a longer-term deal.
The timing of Hendrickson’s request follows recent contract talks in the league, especially after Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby secured a record three-year extension worth $35.5 million annually.
Earlier this February, Hendrickson hinted at his situation on “The Pat McAfee Show,” saying, “If it’s something that helps the Bengals win the Super Bowl, if they get picks or anything like that, I want to help win a Super Bowl for Cincinnati.” His commitment to the team and hope for the future shine through, whether he stays or moves on.
