Super Bowl champion Boye Mafe has signed a three-year, $60 million deal with the Cincinnati Bengals. This move was confirmed by Dianna Russini from The Athletic.
Mafe, who turns 28 in November, was ranked 26th among free agents and fifth among edge defenders. The Seattle Seahawks picked him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. While he hasn’t hit double-digit sacks in his NFL career, he made history with Seattle in 2023 by recording a sack in seven straight games, ending the season with nine sacks.
From 2023 to 2024, Mafe played in 31 games, starting 27 and totaling 15 sacks. However, last season, he took on a smaller role due to the Seahawks strengthening their defensive line. Mafe started only four games and finished with a career-low two sacks.
In terms of playing time, Mafe participated in 50% of defensive snaps last season, down from 72% in 2023 and 60% in 2024.
Fit with the Bengals
Mafe will start as edge rusher alongside Myles Murphy. With last year’s first-round pick, Shemar Stewart, also in the mix, the Bengals are hoping Mafe can thrive in a more prominent role. Their defense urgently needs a pass rusher, and they see Mafe as someone who can develop and make an impact.
Roster Changes
Stewart’s role could be interesting as well. Defensive coordinator Al Golden appreciates his versatility, which might allow Stewart to play inside more on passing downs.
