Bengals Stand Firm Against ‘Silliness’ in Shemar Stewart Negotiation: What It Means for the Team

CINCINNATI — Bengals President Mike Brown didn’t hold back when describing the ongoing contract talks with first-round pick Shemar Stewart. He described the situation as “silliness.”

Director of player personnel, Duke Tobin, echoed his feelings but provided more context about the frustration directed at Stewart’s agent, Zac Hiller. Tobin emphasized that while he doesn’t agree with the advice Stewart is getting, he respects that Stewart is following it. “We’re offering what every other first-round pick has received this year,” he explained.

Stewart was picked 17th overall in April, but negotiations took a turn when he and his agent chose not to sign a waiver that would allow him to practice without a formal contract. While other first-round picks signed, Stewart was left on the sidelines.

The main issue revolves around specific language in the contract. Although the Bengals’ terms are similar to what other teams offer, this year’s contract language regarding future guarantees differs from previous agreements. This change aims to clarify what happens if a player faces significant disciplinary action from the league. Simply put, if Stewart were to face serious legal issues, the team doesn’t want to be stuck covering future payments.

Tobin illustrated the stance by referencing past agreements. “We’re not being unreasonable,” he said. “Contracts change over time. We’re simply modernizing our language, just like the rest of the league does.”

In comparison, last year, another first-round pick, Amarius Mims, smoothly signed his contract, quickly earning trust and a starting position. In contrast, Stewart’s situation turned tense this offseason. At one point during mini-camp, he openly criticized the organization, saying that they cared more about winning arguments than about winning games.

The Bengals have kept in touch with Stewart, even as rumors swirled that he might consider returning to college. Texas A&M’s head coach, Mike Elko, quickly dismissed those rumors, stating there’s no intention for Stewart to rejoin the team this year.

If Stewart decides to sit out this season, he risks delaying his NFL career, including future contract negotiations. This predicament highlights how a seemingly simple contract matter has turned complicated, and while the Bengals maintain that the core issue isn’t with Stewart himself, they are eager for a resolution.

“It’s vital that Shemar is with us,” said Tobin. “We see his potential and want him to succeed.”
