Bethesda Confirms: Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout Switch 2 Games Will Arrive as Code-in-a-Box!

Bethesda is buzzing with excitement over its upcoming releases for the Switch 2. After the success of Skyrim, they’re ready to roll out Fallout 4 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. They even announced a remastered version of Oblivion.

But there’s a slight twist for fans who want physical copies. In a recent blog post, Bethesda revealed that Fallout 4, Skyrim, and Oblivion will come as “code-in-box” releases. This means you’ll get a box, but the game itself will need to be downloaded. Luckily, Indiana Jones will be available as a traditional physical copy.

This focus on digital distribution isn’t just a whim. Recent statistics show that digital game sales have soared in popularity, with nearly 75% of game sales being digital as of 2022. Players prefer the convenience of downloads over physical copies, but many still enjoy collecting cartridges.

This trend reflects a broader shift in the gaming industry. According to tech experts, as cloud gaming gains traction, developers might lean more towards digital formats. However, there’s still a strong audience for physical releases. Many gamers express frustration about the lack of cartridges. On social media, players are already discussing their mixed feelings about the code-in-box format.

Aside from Indiana Jones, Oblivion doesn’t have an official release date yet, but Fallout and Skyrim will hit stores on April 28, with the digital versions arriving earlier on February 24.

It’s a mixed bag for collectors out there. If you want a traditional cartridge experience, you’ll have to go with Indiana Jones.
