Bethlehem Apostolic Temple’s Generous Food Giveaway: Supporting Hundreds in Need

The Bethlehem Apostolic Temple recently held its 35th annual food giveaway at the North Wheeling Community Dream Center, bringing together hundreds of community members. The event kicked off with a heartfelt prayer from Pastor Darrell Cummings at 11 a.m., but many attendees arrived early—some as early as 6 a.m.—eager to receive support.

This year, the temple distributed Thanksgiving meals to 332 families. Pastor Cummings noted the significance of the event, saying it highlights both the rising need for assistance and the community’s willingness to help one another. “No man is an island; we are all in it together,” he shared.

Those who attended received a range of Thanksgiving staples, including turkeys, pies, and bread, along with cleaning supplies and clothing. Thanks to an uptick in volunteers, there were 25% more items available than in previous years. Ohio County Sheriff Nelson Croft, who has supported this initiative for three decades, emphasized the lasting need in the community. “The need is always great, but so is the ability to help,” he noted.

The impact of events like this is significant, especially as more families face food insecurity. According to a recent report by Feeding America, the food insecurity rate is projected to affect around 13 million children in the U.S. alone this year. Efforts like those at the Bethlehem Apostolic Temple become crucial during such trying times.

Pastor Cummings expressed appreciation for the community’s support. He recalled a recipient who last year mentioned that simply having food would make for a happy Thanksgiving, but the extra items made it feel special. “We want to make it special,” he said, reflecting the spirit of giving that underpins the event.

Looking ahead, the temple plans to host a Christmas giveaway next, continuing to serve and uplift those in need. These events remind us of the power of community and the importance of being there for one another.
