DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Football held its second summer scrimmage at Municipal Stadium. The defense shone brightly, while quarterbacks Cam’Ron Ransom and Timmy McClain showcased their skills ahead of the season.

The scrimmage kicked off with McClain leading the offense to an impressive 75-yard rushing touchdown on the first play. Ransom, last season’s starter, orchestrated a solid 12-play drive but faced a setback with the first interception of the day by Jayden Cummings.

The defense was a standout, forcing several three-and-outs and achieving four sacks. This performance highlighted the unit’s growth after two weeks of intense summer training. Head Coach Raymond Woodie Jr. praised their energy and teamwork, noting that their communication and physicality were noticeably improved compared to the previous scrimmage.

“Our defense really stepped up today,” Woodie said. “They were flying around and making plays. It sets the standard for what we need this season.”

Both Ransom and McClain took turns under center, each demonstrating strong arm skills and decision-making. The competition for the starting quarterback position remains fierce as they work on building chemistry with their receivers.

Also in action was Amarie Jones, a transfer from Florida International, who impressed with quick footwork. New wide receiver Rickie Shaw II from Wofford also caught attention during the scrimmage.

Woodie emphasized his goal of fostering a player-led team. “This is the first time we’re really seeing that from the players,” he noted. It was clear from their performance on the field.

The defense also created two forced fumbles, with linebacker Myron Shafer III making key plays. Woodie remarked on Shafer’s potential, describing him as a strong contender for a starting position early in his college career.

The coaching staff is still assessing kickers and punters. Junior transfer Juan Dominguez kicked a solid 42-yard field goal, while sophomore Max Tulen had a deep kick that landed out of bounds at the 10-yard line.

This scrimmage was crucial for the coaching staff as they evaluate players and refine strategies in anticipation of the upcoming season. It offered promising signs for a Wildcats team eager to make an impact in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
