Many celebrities have ventured into the restaurant business, but few have found lasting success. For instance, Priyanka Chopra’s New York restaurant Sona closed after struggling to thrive. Other notable attempts include Sachin Tendulkar’s eateries in India and Virender Sehwag’s venture in New Delhi.
Even globally, celebrity-driven restaurants often falter. Jennifer Lopez’s Madres, which focused on Latin cuisine, closed after just six years. Similarly, filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s submarine-themed Dive! in Los Angeles and Las Vegas ended up closing because of poor performance.
### The Reality of Celebrity Brands
It’s tempting to think that a celebrity’s fame alone can fill tables, but that’s not the case. Food critic Sourish Bhattacharyya emphasizes that media attention from celebrity associations is short-lived. Ultimately, it’s the quality of food and service that determines a restaurant’s success.
Nisha Sampath, a marketing consultant, notes that being famous doesn’t guarantee business skills. “Working with the right partners is essential,” she says. It’s important to have a solid strategy that combines a great product with smart marketing and distribution. Investor Lloyd Mathias agrees, stating, “Without proper planning, the lifespan of a brand is cut short.”
### What Keeps Customers Coming Back
Karan Taurani, a capital executive, stresses the importance of acceptable product quality and innovation. He states that effective marketing is crucial for launching a brand, and knowing your audience is key to satisfaction.
Gauri Devidayal, co-founder of Food Matters Group, highlights the need for balance in celebrity restaurants. “Is it about the hospitality or the celebrity?” she asks. If a restaurant leans too heavily on its celebrity owner for attention, it risks disappointing customers. “The right vibe and food experience are what will keep them returning,” she warns.
While the restaurant industry has proven challenging for many stars, they have found success in other areas. The recently released Candere Hurun India Women Leaders List 2025 features various celebrities making their mark. Anushka Sharma has launched a clothing line, while Deepika Padukone co-founded a skincare brand. Juhi Chawla and Katrina Kaif have also established successful partnerships in sports and beauty.
Overall, it seems that while celebrity names can open doors, sustainable success often requires a solid approach, quality offerings, and a keen understanding of consumer needs. Celebrities might shine brightly in the public eye, but in business, strategy always reigns supreme.
