Bha Bha Ba: A Fractured Celebration
Imagine stepping into a party that’s already spiraling out of control. You feel lost amidst chaotic conversations and missed jokes. That’s the essence of Bha Bha Ba (short for Bhavam Bhakti Bahumanam).
From the start, director Dhananjay Shankar’s debut doesn’t let you forget that the main actor, Dileep, recently faced serious allegations involving a well-known actress. Even though he’s been acquitted, the film ignores this real-world gravity, making it hard to separate truth from the story unfolding on screen.
The plot centers on a man who kidnaps a fictional chief minister of Kerala, portrayed by Baiju Santhosh. As the investigation unfolds, led by the CM’s son, played by Vineeth Sreenivasan, unexpected characters pop in, adding layers of confusion rather than clarity.
Writers Fahim Safar and Noorin Shereef infuse the film with a mix of humor and absurdity, but it often feels overdone. The characters are quirky, yet the film lacks a genuine celebration of anything relatable. Viewers might find themselves questioning what, exactly, is worth celebrating.
One troubling aspect is how the film portrays its protagonist—a kidnapper—without much remorse. It hints at real-life events that many still find disturbing. In the climax, the character is treated as a hero, which leaves a sour taste when viewed against the backdrop of Dileep’s actual legal troubles.
While there are amusing moments, like the brotherly squabbles between Vineeth and Dhyan Sreenivasan, they come across as accidental rather than intentional comedy. The film’s tone shifts frequently, making the humor inconsistent. Even playful dances with a superstar like Mohanlal seem dragged out, raising eyebrows about why such talent engaged in this project.
Adding to the film’s discomfort is its relentless soundtrack and self-congratulatory nature, which feels more indulgent than entertaining. The blend of real-life implications and a carefree narrative leaves it feeling mismatched and unsalvageable.
In the end, Bha Bha Ba aims for a festive tone but stumbles under its weight of controversy and confusion, making it hard to enjoy fully.
