Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun shares insights about head coach Gautam Gambhir’s approach. Gambhir, who previously mentored the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, is known for defining roles clearly while giving players the freedom to express themselves.
Arun believes that Gambhir’s coaching style is a key factor in elevating India’s performance in T20 cricket. After taking over as head coach following the 2024 T20 World Cup, Gambhir has faced some challenges in the Test format. However, the team has thrived in T20 internationals. “He provides the freedom for players to showcase their skills. You know where you stand with him. He’s strict but clear about expectations,” Arun mentioned.
Furthermore, Arun attributes India’s recent T20 success to the robust environment of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He highlighted how the league serves as a training ground for players, enabling rapid development. Since the last T20 World Cup, India has won eight consecutive T20I series and secured the 2025 Asia Cup title.
“I’ve seen leagues all over, and the IPL stands out. With ten teams, every match is competitive. Performing well here means you’re ready for international challenges,” Arun stated.
However, preparing for dew conditions poses its own set of challenges. In recent games, the Indian team opted to bat first, ignoring the typical dew advantages in the second innings. The bowlers performed well overall but struggled with wet conditions during key matches. Arun suggested that it’s crucial for bowlers to practice with a wet ball to adapt better.
“It’s tough for batters and bowlers alike. To maintain grip and control, bowlers need to get used to the conditions. It’s a challenge, but essential for the team’s success,” he said.
As T20 cricket continues to evolve, the role of the IPL in shaping young talent cannot be overstated. According to a study by the International Cricket Council, exposure to high-pressure situations in leagues like the IPL has substantially improved players’ performance under stress. With Gambhir at the helm, the Indian team aims to leverage this environment for sustained success on the international stage.
