Bharat Forge and Windracers Forge Strategic Partnership to Revolutionize UAV Operations in India

Bharat Forge Limited (BFL) and Windracers Limited, a UK company known for its heavy-lift drones, are teaming up to bring the Windracers ULTRA drone to India. They signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at DSEI 2025, aiming to boost aerospace technology in both countries. This partnership aligns with the UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the India-UK Vision 2035, paving the way for innovation and collaboration.

This MoU lasts for two years, giving the companies a chance to localize operations, carry out joint trials, and finalize deployment plans in India. The ULTRA drone can support both military and civilian needs. It can carry out Carrier On Board Delivery (COD) operations for the Indian Navy and assist with logistics for the Indian Army and Air Force. This versatility makes it suitable for various challenging environments.

Amit Kalyani, joint MD of Bharat Forge, expressed excitement about the partnership. He mentioned that the ULTRA not only strengthens India’s drone capabilities but also offers efficient solutions for logistics in tough terrains. The drone is designed for operations in high-altitude and maritime conditions, ensuring reliable performance for all three military branches—naval, air, and ground. This is in line with India’s Ministry of Defence’s long-term plans that focus on unmanned logistics and dual-use technologies.

The Windracers ULTRA has already shown its effectiveness in international operations, including supporting research missions in Antarctica. This experience could translate well to India, allowing safe and efficient transport in rugged areas.

Simon Muderack, CEO of Windracers, highlighted the significance of this collaboration for enhancing dual-use operations in India. He noted that their combined expertise would provide valuable benefits for India’s defense and civil sectors.

The ULTRA drone operates efficiently for six to seven hours, and its advanced autopilot system is tailored for diverse environments, including India’s coastal regions and the mountainous Himalayas. This MoU aligns with both companies’ goal to enhance UAV capabilities in India, promoting innovation and technological advancement in defense.

The partnership could also bring economic benefits. Reports indicate that the drone market in India is expected to grow significantly, aiming for a market size reaching $6 billion by 2027. By focusing on localization and technology transfer, Bharat Forge and Windracers could play a crucial role in shaping the future of UAV applications in India.

This collaboration isn’t just about technology; it shows a commitment to deeper ties between India and the UK, signifying how international partnerships can address emerging needs in defense and logistics.
