Bharat Forge has just made a big move in the defense sector. They’ve signed an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh government to build India’s first private marine gas turbine repair and development center in Visakhapatnam. This landmark project will sit on about 80 acres within the state’s defense manufacturing corridor, right next to the Naval Dockyard and the Eastern Naval Command headquarters.
The aim? To support the Indian Navy’s maintenance needs for marine gas turbines and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. This is crucial since recent supply chain issues have impacted repair timelines for military vessels.
The project will roll out in phases. Initially, it will establish a facility for repair and overhaul, along with component manufacturing and a lab for non-destructive evaluations. The first phase is designed to have a quick turnaround for military needs, capable of servicing requests in just 72 hours.
The second phase will focus on developing indigenous marine gas turbines, complete with specialized testing facilities. Bharat Forge estimates that this initiative will create around 750 jobs, both direct and indirect.
Amit Kalyani, Vice-Chairman of Bharat Forge, emphasizes the importance of keeping these capabilities close to naval operations. Increasing domestic capacity is crucial, especially given how supply chain disruptions have affected military readiness.
According to a recent survey by the Defense Supply Chain Management Initiative, 70% of military leaders believe that self-reliance in defense manufacturing leads to enhanced national security. This sentiment is echoed in the government’s efforts to boost local manufacturing across sectors.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed confidence that Andhra Pradesh could become a hub for aerospace and defense production, strengthening India’s position in the global market.
