Bharat Intelligence, a new agritech startup, has recently secured ₹7 crore in pre-seed funding from Sahyadri Farms. This funding will help the company expand its team, develop products, and grow operations in vital horticultural areas of Western Maharashtra, like grapes, bananas, tomatoes, and pomegranates.
Started in 2024 by Azhaan Merchant and Gourav Sanghai, Bharat Intelligence is tackling a significant issue in agriculture: the shortage of farm labor. Their platform leverages AI technology to streamline rural labor markets. It predicts work demands, schedules crews, and connects them with farmers using vernacular interfaces, making it easier for everyone to participate.
What makes Bharat Intelligence stand out is its focus on understanding rural life. The team gathers insights on trust networks, seasonal patterns, and local workflows. By doing this, they ensure their technology works within the real-life context of farmers, rather than imposing a rigid system that might not fit.
“India’s economy is based on agriculture and is very personal,” says Azhaan Merchant, Co-Founder & CEO. “For AI to work here, it must understand the subtleties of rural life, be it a greeting in a village market or the trust that forms the foundation of farming communities.”
The startup envisions its platform as a way to solve immediate labor shortages and as a tool for long-term rural development. By prioritizing context, Bharat Intelligence aims to create solutions that resonate with over a billion people who live in India.
As agriculture becomes more tech-driven, such innovations are crucial. According to a recent report by the Food and Agriculture Organization, labor shortages in rural areas could worsen in the coming years. By aligning technology with agricultural practices, Bharat Intelligence is not just solving today’s problems; they’re also paving the way for future advancements in Indian agriculture.
