Bharat Taxi, a cooperative transport platform, has quickly made a name for itself since its launch on February 5, 2023. By focusing on a zero-commission model, it now serves over 3.5 million users and more than 600,000 drivers across India.
This initiative, spearheaded by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, puts drivers in the spotlight. They are seen as stakeholders, not just employees. The company reports that drivers are seeing their monthly earnings increase by 25% to 30%, while passengers benefit from prices that are about 15% lower than with traditional services.
Jayen Mehta, the Chairman of Bharat Taxi, proudly calls it a tech-driven cooperative that supports driver autonomy. “We ensure that all ride earnings go directly to drivers,” he said. This shift has boosted the dignity and financial stability of those behind the wheel, creating a model that other companies may want to emulate.
Formerly, many drivers struggled under heavy commission fees in traditional rideshare models. Pravin Thakor, a driver on the Bharat Taxi platform, reflected on his challenging experiences. “Other companies made it hard to make a living,” he noted. “Now I feel secure about my future and can earn better.”
Another driver, Janak Barot, highlighted how the pricing structure is advantageous for both sides. “Charging Rs 17-18 per kilometer helps us and our customers. Plus, it feels great to earn directly without extra cuts.”
With over 100,000 drivers in Gujarat alone, Bharat Taxi is expanding. After Ahmedabad and Surat, they’re set to launch services in Vadodara, aiming for deeper local engagement. To promote this, they’re reaching out directly in busy places like IT parks and airports.
Ajay Kumar Gupta, President of the Ahmedabad Rickshaw Chalak Ekta Union, noted that many drivers are drawn to the cooperative model. “It’s our own Indian company. The onboarding process is easy, and approval takes just 12 hours,” he said.
Safety is also a priority for Bharat Taxi. They’ve teamed up with Gujarat Police for emergency support via an SOS system, enhancing the security of both passengers and drivers. Additionally, they’ve trained over 10,000 drivers in digital skills, further integrating technology into their operations.
With plans to improve local public transport connections, Bharat Taxi might just be setting a new standard for cooperative models in the mobility sector. As this initiative grows, it has the potential to reshape how we think about rideshare services in India.
