Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates recently praised India for its leadership in innovation. Speaking at an event in Seattle to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, he noted that India is finding ways to improve lives across the Global South. Gates emphasized that Gandhi’s values—like equality and dignity for everyone—are central to the work of the Gates Foundation.
The event, organized by the Indian Consulate in Seattle and the Gates Foundation, also featured cultural performances and Indian cuisine. Gates highlighted the importance of collaborating with India to achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, which aims for a developed India by 2047. “Today, India stands as a global leader in innovation,” he said, stressing its potential impact on improving millions of lives.
Gandhi’s birthday was marked by several events around Seattle. A small ceremony took place at Gandhi’s statue near Bellevue Public Library, where local officials paid their respects. Another tribute occurred at the Seattle Center near the iconic Space Needle. Indian-American community leaders participated, with children singing Gandhi’s beloved hymns.
In New York, consul general Binaya Pradhan honored Gandhi at the Gandhi Peace Garden, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019. The garden features 150 trees symbolizing each of the 50 U.S. states. The Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., also organized a program, where the director of the Gandhi Memorial Center spoke about Gandhi’s enduring message.
The conversation around innovation in India is gaining traction. According to a recent report, India is among the top countries for startup growth, with approximately 50,000 startups launched in 2022 alone. This surge reflects a growing belief in the country’s capacity to be a hub for technological advancements.
