Bill Murray Reveals the Emotional Moments That Brought Him to Tears During SNL50: ‘I Couldn’t Help It!’

Bill Murray recently opened up about his emotional experience during the “SNL50” anniversary special. He admitted that he cried several times while watching the show.

In an interview on SiriusXM’s “Sway in the Morning,” Murray shared how he was unexpectedly moved. “It was surprisingly emotional,” he said. He couldn’t hold back tears during moments that struck him personally. “I wept three times in the show. It really got to me.”

One moment that hit him hard was a clip featuring Gilda Radner, a beloved cast member and friend. Murray remembered watching her and Steve Martin rehearse a dance number. “I love Gilda; I was crazy about Gilda. I sort of came apart,” he recalled. Surrounded by others in the dressing room, he found it hard to contain his feelings.

Murray also reflected on John Belushi, another late “SNL” star. He mentioned a film by Tom Schiller that showed Belushi visiting the “Saturday Night Live” graveyard, which brought back memories. “To see him… I could go now, just thinking about it,” Murray admitted. He acknowledged Belushi’s impact on the careers of many comedians, saying he helped pull them all up from Chicago.

During the anniversary special, Murray, who was on “Saturday Night Live” from 1977 to 1980, appeared multiple times. He participated in a special edition of “Weekend Update” and brought back his famous character, Nick the Lounge Singer. He is currently promoting his new film, “Riff Raff,” where he stars alongside Jennifer Coolidge, Ed Harris, Gabrielle Union, and Pete Davidson.
