Billie Eilish, a ten-time Grammy winner and two-time Oscar winner, may soon make her acting debut. She is reportedly in advanced talks to star in a film adaptation of The Bell Jar, a classic novel by Sylvia Plath.
Oscar-winning filmmaker Sarah Polley, known for films like Women Talking and Away From Her, will direct the project. Focus Features is finalizing its deal to distribute the film in the U.S.
Eilish will take on the lead role of Esther Greenwood, a young woman grappling with mental illness and societal pressures. This semi-autobiographical novel, first published in 1963, mirrors Plath’s own struggles. Tragically, Plath passed away shortly after the book’s release in the UK. Since then, The Bell Jar has sold millions of copies worldwide and has been translated into over forty languages.
Eilish’s music often explores deep emotional themes, making her a fitting choice for this adaptation. Although there are currently no plans for her to contribute songs to the film, fans might hope for a musical element. Eilish has already won Oscars for her songs “No Time To Die” and “Barbie,” making her the youngest two-time Oscar winner in history.
This film isn’t the first attempt to adapt The Bell Jar. The only notable adaptation came in 1979, directed by Larry Peerce. Multiple other projects, including one with Julia Stiles in 2007 and another directed by Kirsten Dunst, have never materialized. Even a planned series in 2019 was quickly abandoned.
The anticipation surrounding Eilish’s potential role and the film’s production highlights a renewed interest in Plath’s work. Some social media users have begun discussing the connection between current mental health awareness and The Bell Jar, underscoring the novel’s relevance today.
