He worries it could push the state towards socialism, reminding him of the oppressive environment his family fled from in the Soviet Union when he was young. The tax is aimed at those with wealth exceeding $1.1 billion. This has prompted many billionaires to reconsider their residence in California. Recently, a union backing the tax announced they had gathered nearly 1.6 million signatures, which is well above the 875,000 needed to place the measure on the ballot.
Supporters argue that the tax could help fund public health services, especially after cuts in federal healthcare funding. However, critics, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, worry that driving wealthy individuals out could harm the state’s economy.
Billionaires like Larry Page and Mark Zuckerberg have already relocated to Florida, drawn to its lack of state income tax. In fact, the luxury real estate market in Miami has surged, with prices jumping 67% over the last five years.
Some billionaires who chose to stay in California have voiced their concerns. Brendan Foody called parts of the tax “insane,” but he intends to remain in the state due to business ties. Reid Hoffman, another co-founder of LinkedIn, described the proposal as “horrendous” for innovation but has also not announced plans to leave.
On the other hand, Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, supports the tax, saying he’s “perfectly fine” with it. This divergence of opinions highlights how complex the situation is for California’s wealthy residents. As the debate continues, it raises questions about the future landscape of the state and its economic health.
