VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton men’s basketball team recently made waves by defeating Elmira 100-60. This win was significant, as it marked their highest score in two years and saw them shooting an impressive 69%.
The Bearcats raced to an early 22-9 lead, missing just one shot inside the arc in the first half. They led 59-35 at halftime and dominated the second half, despite being short-handed with only seven scholarship players.
Junior forward Zyier Beverly led the charge with 25 points, alongside nine rebounds, five blocks, and three steals. Senior guard Wes Peterson Jr. also shined, recording a career-high of 22 points and seven rebounds, hitting 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Freshman Jake Blackburn added 12 points, while junior point guard Jeremiah Quigley and sophomore Stephan Snagg chipped in 16 points each.
Coach Levell Sanders praised the team for their defensive effort, especially against Elmira’s 3-point shooting. He emphasized the importance of embracing their strengths and maintaining respect for their opponents. The Bearcats scored a whopping 60 points in the paint, following a strong performance against Army.
According to recent stats, performance in basketball can hinge on shooting accuracy and points in the paint. In Binghamton’s case, their 69.1% shooting broke the previous record of 65.2%, set in 2021. This news reflects a larger trend in college basketball, where teams with high shooting percentages tend to outperform opponents.
As they shift focus to league play, Binghamton will host NJIT this Saturday at 2 p.m. The Bearcats are now looking to build on this momentum.
