Binghamton Softball Achieves Big Win Over Mercer
Binghamton’s softball team delivered an impressive performance, defeating Mercer 10-5 in their final game of a non-conference series. This victory marks their second win of the weekend and brings their record to 14-9.
Sophomore catcher Elisa Allen was a standout player, hitting a grand slam during a pivotal fifth inning, where the team scored seven runs. Junior Emma Lawson and freshman Rachel Carey also contributed significantly, with each earning two RBIs.
Turning Point of the Game
The game took a dramatic turn in the fifth inning. Binghamton entered that inning trailing 3-0. Lawson kicked things off with a two-run single, and senior Sarah Rende followed with an RBI single. Allen’s grand slam then sealed the deal, pushing the Bearcats ahead. This burst of scoring is the most they’ve had in a single inning this season.
In the sixth inning, Carey added more runs with a two-run double, further extending Binghamton’s lead. Mercer attempted a comeback, scoring two runs thanks to Parris Wiggs’s home run, but the Bearcats responded in the seventh with an RBI single from Brianna Santos.
Impressive Individual Performances
Junior pitcher Brianna Roberts earned the win, bringing her season record to 8-2 after pitching the last four innings. Lawson was a key player at bat, going 3-for-4 and finishing the weekend with a batting average of .400. Allen, with her grand slam, now leads the America East with six home runs and 21 RBIs.
Coaching Milestone
This win was also significant for head coach Jess Bump, marking her 100th victory as the team’s head coach. She is only the third coach in Binghamton’s history to achieve this milestone, with a current record of 100-70.
Looking Ahead
Binghamton will start their America East play next weekend at home against UAlbany, and they will be looking to carry this momentum into their conference games.
Fun Fact
Binghamton’s softball program has seen significant coaching success in recent years. Michelle Johnston, who previously held the position, achieved a remarkable 242 wins from 2010 to 2021. Sports coaching often has a lasting impact on player development, and this success reflects Binghamton’s commitment to building a strong program.
