James Ohlen was the lead designer for Baldur’s Gate 2 and spent over 22 years at BioWare. After leaving in 2018, he co-founded Archetype Entertainment, working on a new sci-fi RPG called Exodus. This project has drawn comparisons to Mass Effect. But he left under unclear circumstances just before the game’s launch last year. Ohlen described the experience as “nearly killed me.”
In a recent interview with PC Gamer, he shared the pressures of being a studio head. “As a creative, you care about everything,” he said. “But you have to make tough decisions while facing constant criticism.” He expressed that he wouldn’t want to be in such a situation again, calling it unhealthy.
Exodus is an ambitious RPG shooter using time dilation to show how choices impact different worlds across centuries. It has an unexpected twist involving Matthew McConaughey. Funded by Wizards of the Coast, the project aims to leverage deep lore and world-building for future tabletop games and possibly movies or TV shows. The game is set to release in 2027, spanning several significant global events, including the pandemic and multiple presidential administrations.
Ohlen also discussed the challenges he faced with difficult contract talks and bureaucratic hurdles at Wizards. Managing a new studio while leading the creative vision for Exodus proved taxing. “I don’t enjoy being a studio head,” he admitted, adding that he missed having someone to buffer him from executive pressures.
Now, Ohlen is shifting gears. He’s collaborating with former BioWare creative director Jesse Sky to create a series of RPG adventure books. It doesn’t seem like he’s in a hurry to return to the world of video game startups anytime soon.
This shift mirrors a broader trend in the gaming industry. According to a recent survey, nearly 50% of video game developers report facing burnout, highlighting the demanding nature of the field. Many, like Ohlen, are choosing to explore different creative avenues to find fulfillment.
