Amit Malviya, who leads the BJP’s IT department, shared a copy of the electoral roll from Indira Gandhi’s official residence. He argues that Sonia’s name appeared on the list in 1980, even while she still held Italian citizenship. “This looks like a clear violation of electoral law, which states you need to be an Indian citizen to register as a voter,” Malviya said on social media.
Interestingly, Sonia’s name was removed from the rolls in 1982 due to public outrage but resurfaced in 1983. Malviya pointed out that she was registered on the electoral roll before officially becoming a citizen, raising eyebrows about the legitimacy of her registration. This has led to accusations of electoral malpractice.
Anurag Thakur, another BJP leader, went further, alleging voter registration issues in various parliamentary seats. He called for resignations from several opposition figures, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, suggesting that they won their seats through dubious means.
In response, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera emphasized the challenges of compiling data, asserting that the BJP’s claims indicate their close ties to the Election Commission. He also demanded that evidence provided by Thakur be handed over for investigation.
This situation illustrates a growing tension in Indian politics, where allegations of electoral integrity are common. A recent survey found that 67% of voters are concerned about fair elections, indicating that these claims resonate with the public.
