After the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) announced that full SNAP benefits would return for November, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is stepping up its efforts to assist those in need. However, as CEO Stacy Dykstra noted, many people are still feeling the aftershocks of the shutdown. “Recovering from this is not easy, much like an aftermath of a natural disaster,” she explained. Many families are struggling to catch up on lost wages and essential expenses.
The food bank is already busy distributing thousands of pounds of food. Recently, they received a significant boost—a $150,000 donation from Oklahoma locals Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani. This generous contribution helps the food bank continue its vital work.
Dykstra emphasized the importance of community support. “With the help of our partners and donors, we can ensure that nobody is left behind after this challenging period,” she stated.
According to a recent report by Feeding America, food insecurity has risen significantly during the pandemic and ongoing economic challenges. A 2023 survey revealed that over 41 million people in the U.S. relied on food assistance services last year, underscoring the importance of organizations like the Regional Food Bank.
