HOUSTON — After a rough game against the Houston Rockets, the Portland Trail Blazers did something unusual. They kept their locker room door closed after the game for a team meeting, even beyond the usual cooling-off period.
This was their first blowout loss of the season, ending with a score of 140-116. “Sometimes we need to talk as a team. We’re like family,” said Deni Avdija, highlighting the need for open communication after tough outings.
As interim coach Tiago Splitter noted, the Blazers were outplayed in every aspect. Houston’s players, including Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun, dominated. The Blazers struggled, managing only nine fast-break points and turning the ball over 20 times, which led directly to 30 points for Houston.
The players recognized something was “off.” Point guard Jrue Holiday mentioned, “Today, part of us didn’t have a rhythm.” That feeling prompted the meeting, where various players shared their perspectives.
The mood was about unity rather than dwelling on numbers. Jerami Grant noted the importance of coming together after a setback. “It’s a long season,” he said, emphasizing the need to stay connected and focused.
This loss marked the Blazers’ third in four games. They’ve had their triumphs, defeating teams like Golden State and Denver earlier in the season. However, consistency remains a challenge. Grant pointed out that even though they lost to a strong team, they couldn’t let it affect their morale.
“Obvious adjustments are needed,” he shared. Defensive energy has dipped, and careless turnovers have become too frequent. But the goal was to ensure one bad game didn’t become a trend.
The team also has some challenges to face. With key players injured, fatigue from a lengthy road trip may be creeping in. Yet, the meeting centered on rebuilding their winning mindset, not making excuses.
“We’re still positive about the season,” noted Toumani Camara. “If we stick to our game plan, we’ll be fine.”
Looking ahead, the Blazers are eager for a win as they wrap up their road trip against Dallas. Grant simply stated, “We want a win, no matter how it comes.”
As the Blazers navigate this season, focusing on communication and teamwork will be crucial. Players are learning that every setback is an opportunity to grow together. With a solid strategy and belief in one another, they can bounce back stronger.
