Middle Tennessee women’s basketball had an impressive week, bagging both Conference USA Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors. Alayna Contreras was recognized as Player of the Week for her standout performance, while Blair Baugus took home the Freshman of the Week title for the eighth time this season.
Contreras, a senior from Minneapolis, had an incredible week, averaging 26.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. She truly shined on Senior Day against Missouri State, scoring a season-high 31 points. Contreras had an impressive shooting night, hitting 67% of her shots from the field and making all but one of her free throws.
Earlier in the week against FIU, she scored 22 points, showcasing her skills with four assists and four steals. Her performance speaks to her growth as a player, and this is her second Player of the Week award in her career.
Baugus, a freshman forward from Murfreesboro, also had a fantastic week, averaging 20.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. She ended the week with a career-high 29 points and 10 rebounds against Missouri State, marking her 13th double-double of the season. Impressively, she went perfect from the free-throw line, shooting 10-of-10 in that game. Baugus displayed versatility, pulling down offensive rebounds and contributing on defense.
Both players are helping to elevate the team as they prepare for the Conference USA Women’s Basketball Championship. They’ll face Missouri State on March 12 at 2 p.m. CT, with the game being broadcasted on ESPN+.
The impact of these athletes extends beyond the court; their performances are likely to resonate with fans and inspire younger players. The recognition they receive is not just a personal achievement but a boost to the entire program.
