Blugolds’ Senior Night Showdown: Eleventh-Ranked Team Triumphs Over Pointers

UW-Eau Claire Wrestling Victorious Over Stevens Point

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s wrestling team had a spectacular win against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, crushing them 42-4. The team displayed strong performances across various weight classes, with standout moments from Ian Pepple and Izzy Balsiger.

Pepple earned a notable fall at 3:23 in the 197-pound class, while Balsiger kicked off the match with a solid 7-3 decision. The Blugolds dominated the contest, taking nine out of ten matches.

Wyatt Unser’s technical fall victory at 133 pounds was impressive. He defeated George Ahles 18-2 in just over six minutes, adding five points to the team score. Ty Fink followed at 141 pounds with a 19-4 technical fall against Maddox Rye, securing another five points. Preston Carlisle controlled the 174-pound match, winning 15-0 against Dylan Cariveau.

Zak McPhee didn’t hold back at 184 pounds, pinning Easton Hull in 6:37 for six points. Sloan Welch capped off the evening by winning in the heavyweight class, achieving a 16-0 technical fall over Jack Callen in just 3:25.

The team’s depth shone during exhibition matches as well. Gavin Rockey and Ryan Goddard each secured victories, bolstering the team’s momentum. The Blugolds celebrated their six seniors during the match, recognizing Tiago Bertoldo Zwicky, Carter Friend, Ryan Goddard, Preston Carlisle, Izzy Balsiger, and Jon Harvey.

With this victory, UW-Eau Claire improved its overall dual record to 8-4 and sits at 3-1 in the WIAC. In contrast, Stevens Point dropped to 5-8 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

As the Blugolds prepare for their next match against UW-Platteville on Sunday, January 25, it’s clear they’re aiming to maintain their winning streak. Exciting times lie ahead for this dedicated team!
