Blugolds Win Against Titans in Thrilling Game

In a strong display of teamwork and skill, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women’s basketball team beat the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 65-54, at the Sonnentag Event Center. A standout fourth quarter, where they scored 22 points, helped them pull ahead decisively. They also dominated the boards with a 39-34 advantage in rebounds.

The game kicked off with the Titans scoring early, but UWEC quickly struck back. Kyla Overskei tied the game with two free throws, showcasing her impressive performance at the line. She finished with eight free throws, well above her season average of 3.1.

Throughout the first quarter, the teams exchanged leads. UW-Eau Claire ended the quarter with a slight edge, thanks to Olivia Witkowski’s jumper just before the buzzer, putting them ahead 16-15.

In the second quarter, the Blugolds maintained a narrow lead, closing out the half at 26-24. Emma Donovan’s layup provided a boost, and Reanna Hutchinson emerged as a key player, finishing with 15 points, significantly surpassing her usual scoring.

The third quarter saw UWEC outscore the Titans 17-13. Britta DeMar’s fast-break layup and timely three-pointer from Hutchinson widened the gap. However, the Titans kept the pressure on, scoring a three-pointer to stay in the game.

The final quarter began with Hutchinson scoring, helping the Blugolds maintain their lead. Key free throws from Overskei and Witkowski ensured a solid finish. Overall, Hutchinson led the way with 15 points, closely followed by Kailey Tulachka with a season-high 12. The team’s tenacity paid off, as they won the quarter 22-17.

Currently, the Blugolds have a record of 13-9, with a 3-8 mark in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play. In contrast, UWO stands strong at 20-2 overall and 9-2 in WIAC.

Looking ahead, UW-Eau Claire will face UW-Whitewater on Saturday, Feb. 14, at Kachel Fieldhouse. This game is crucial for the Blugolds as they continue to compete for a better position in the conference.
