The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is focusing on climate change and environmental protection for its upcoming election manifesto. Dr. Mahdi Amin, an adviser to party chairman Tarique Rahman, stressed this commitment during a discussion titled "Manifesto Talk: Youth, Environment, and Climate."
Dr. Amin highlighted that the BNP would not endorse any development projects that harm the environment. He mentioned plans to revive the green revolution started by former President Ziaur Rahman, along with ongoing tree planting initiatives to boost nationwide greenery.
He criticized the previous government, claiming it destroyed the environment under the guise of mega projects and misappropriated funds meant for development. He pointed out that important feasibility studies to assess environmental impact were overlooked.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, an adviser for the Ministry of Forest, Environment, and Climate Affairs, supported these claims. She noted that the interim government is actively taking steps against air pollution and illegal river grabbing but emphasized the need for collaboration among political parties to address the environmental crisis.
The conversation also turned to youth involvement. Several speakers encouraged young people to unite in tackling climate change. They believe that increased awareness among the youth can lead to meaningful change.
Experts have found that political accountability is crucial for effective climate action. According to a recent survey, about 70% of citizens believe political leaders should prioritize environmental issues. Additionally, investigations have shown that funds intended for climate resilience have been mismanaged in the past.
As this manifesto dialogue was organized by 15 environmental organizations, including Sachetan Foundation and Brighters, it demonstrates a collective desire to prioritize the environment in political agendas.

By focusing on these crucial issues, the BNP seeks to engage voters in a dialogue about sustainable development—an endeavor that may define the future of Bangladesh’s environment.
