Bodach-Turner Gears Up for an Exciting Journey to the FISU World University Games!

FARMINGTON – Ayla Bodach-Turner, a junior from East Montpelier, Vermont, has earned a spot on the Division III United States Nordic Team. She will compete at the FISU World University Games in Torino, Italy, in January 2025. Ayla is one of 13 athletes from across the country selected for this honor.

To qualify, Ayla submitted an application that was carefully reviewed by a committee of coaches and former participants. The application required details about her academic achievements, competitive history, and a personal statement about her passion for skiing.

The World University Games are a showcase for top collegiate athletes worldwide, attracting competitors from many countries like Japan, Norway, and Italy. “This trip will help me grow as an athlete and as a person,” said Ayla. “It’s a step toward my dreams of becoming a teacher and coach.”

These games are held every two years, like a college-level Olympics. They rotate between different countries. Torino last hosted the event in 2007 and will welcome athletes to compete in various sports, including Nordic skiing, biathlon, and snowboarding.

Ayla will race at Pragelato, a key venue in Italy. Over 11 days, athletes will participate in competitions across multiple sports starting with a ceremonial opening on January 13 and the first events on January 14. Ayla’s team will take part in five races, including individual events and relays.

Her Racing Schedule:

• January 15: 10-Kilometer Freestyle
• January 17: 1.5-Kilometer Classic Sprints
• January 19: 1.5-Kilometer Mixed Team Sprint
• January 21: 4 x 7.5-Kilometer Mixed Relay
• January 23: 20-Kilometer Classic Mass Start

The coaching staff will finalize her events based on her performance during training. The Nordic Team comprises 13 athletes, including six men and seven women, coming from schools like Paul Smith’s College and St. Olaf College. The team will be led by Christi Boggs and Rachel Watson.

At the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF), Ayla has been a standout athlete in the USCSA. She earned All-American honors her first two years and secured a silver medal in the 1.5-kilometer sprints in 2023. In 2024, she improved her placement by finishing sixth overall at the National Championships.

“We are very proud of Ayla’s achievement,” said Head Nordic Coach Buzz Bean. “This is a significant honor for her and our program. She shows what dedication and hard work can achieve.”

Ayla has garnered support from the Farmington community as she prepares for this exciting opportunity. “This experience means a lot to me and my community,” she said. “I am thrilled to represent both the United States and UMF.”
