Boeing and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) are teaming up to boost sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in India. This partnership aims to enhance India’s SAF production and align with the country’s environmental goals.
They will work together to produce SAF in larger quantities, ensure that the fuel meets certification standards, and create supportive policies for a successful SAF ecosystem in India. Additionally, Boeing and HPCL will set sustainability standards throughout the SAF supply chain and develop training programs to share best practices.
Salil Gupte, president of Boeing India, stated, “At Boeing, we want to help our customers meet their sustainability targets. SAF is key to reducing carbon emissions in aviation, and partnerships like this are essential for advancing production in India.”
Amit Garg, HPCL’s marketing director, added that with the aviation sector’s focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, developing and adopting SAF is crucial for long-term sustainability.
HPCL is already making strides in SAF commercialization. Their HP Green R&D Centre has developed a patented method called Trijet technology, which converts used cooking oil into SAF.
SAF can cut carbon emissions by up to 84% based on the feedstock used. It can be sourced from various materials, including non-edible plants, agricultural waste, and even municipal waste. This innovative approach to sourcing fuel has the potential to significantly lower aviation’s environmental impact in the future.
