HOWLAND — The Bolindale Christian Church has upgraded its food pantry with a fresh remodel, thanks to financial backing from Trumbull County commissioners. This new space, complete with four main rooms, aims to address the growing need for food assistance in the area.
Chuck Mackey, the food pantry’s executive director, noted that the demand for food has surged in recent years. Much of the pantry’s stock comes from the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. The county funded $62,750 for the renovation, and after a year-long project, the pantry now features a welcoming layout.
New additions include a shopping area where clients can use small carts to choose their items, much like a grocery store. “We want to create a comforting experience for our visitors,” Mackey explained. The pantry stocks a range of canned goods, frozen meats, and other essentials. Each year, it distributes about 30 tons of food.
In 2011, when the pantry first opened, it occupied just one room. Now, it offers a much larger space that allows people to select their own food, enhancing their experience. The pantry is open for food distribution from 3 to 5 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.
Julianne Carsone from Second Harvest Food Bank praised the renovations, stating, “This is fabulous. The church has done a phenomenal job meeting the needs of people. They now have more resources to help.”
Preston Walley, from Preston Builders, described the project as an extensive makeover. New flooring, LED lighting, and waterproofed rooms were all part of the renovation. They also installed a new freezer and a handicap-accessible ramp.
Food pantries play a crucial role in many communities, especially during challenging economic times. According to a 2020 study by Feeding America, food insecurity rates increased significantly during the pandemic, affecting 1 in 8 Americans. The growth in food pantries reflects this rising need for support.
Donations to the Bolindale Food Pantry can be made at their location: 2749 Fairview Ave., Warren, OH 44484. Your support can help make a difference in the community.
