In Sandpoint, Arby’s recently made a big splash by donating $1,500 to the Bonner Community Food Bank (BCFB). This contribution was part of one of their largest fundraising efforts since opening. Anna Kampe, the volunteer coordinator at BCFB, emphasized that donations like this are vital, especially as they’ve seen the number of families coming in nearly double. This surge is linked to rising concerns about SNAP benefits amid the recent government shutdown.
Kampe stated, “It raised awareness about food insecurity in our community and gave people a chance to support one another.” The money from donations primarily goes toward purchasing essential shelf-stable food like canned chicken and tuna. These items are crucial as they help the food bank stretch its budget further.
While the holiday season is a peak time for donations, Kampe noted, “Large donations are key to continuing to stock the shelves.” For example, during the first week of their Thanksgiving bag program, they provided over 500 families with festive meals. In times of lower donations, these contributions are especially helpful. Kampe mentioned, “In February, when donations have diminished, we can call on that.”
The food bank sources fresh produce and meat from local grocery stores through their grocery rescue program. Kampe explained that stores donate items that may not meet retailer standards but are still fresh and safe to eat. This not only helps fill the food bank’s pantry but also saves costs and reduces waste.
Customers at Arby’s were encouraged to round up their bills as a donation, and many stepped up. Arby’s manager, Stacy Johnson, chose to support BCFB because of her strong ties to the local community. “I have seen how the food bank helps young mothers and others who struggle,” she said, adding that her own past experiences made this cause personal.
Employee Hope Ayres noted that many customers shared their own experiences with the food bank while donating, saying things like, “I’ve struggled, and they helped me.” Some patrons even opted to donate larger amounts, inspired to give back to a service that had once supported them.
According to recent statistics, food insecurity is a growing issue across the U.S. A report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture revealed that around 10.5% of households faced food insecurity in 2021. Increasing awareness and activism around hunger can transform communities into stronger support networks.
Overall, this outpouring of generosity shows how local efforts can make a big difference. For more information about the Bonner Community Food Bank and to find out how you can help, check out their website at bonnerfoodbank.org.
