JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. – Recently, volunteers gathered at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. Their mission? Preparing bags of food for local food pantries. It was a heartwarming scene of community spirit.
The event was organized by “Extra Table Feeds,” a branch of Extra Table, a non-profit dedicated to providing shelf-stable food throughout Mississippi. They teamed up with companies like Ingalls and Chevron to pack the food bags.
These thoughtfully filled bags will soon reach families in need across six counties in South Mississippi. Volunteers are dedicated to ensuring that no one goes hungry.
Lisa Bradley, Ingalls Shipbuilding’s Manager of Stakeholder Engagement, emphasized the season of giving. “It’s the time to support your food pantries and share some cheer with those who need a little extra help,” she noted. This seasonal spirit isn’t just uplifting—it’s necessary, especially in tougher times.
According to recent stats from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food insecurity affects millions of Americans, with recent data showing that up to 10.5% of households struggled to secure enough food in 2021. This highlights the important work organizations like Extra Table are doing to combat hunger in our communities.
Extra Table was founded by Robert St. John in 2009. It began with a simple idea: to help fill the gaps in local food supplies. Since then, it has continued to expand its reach, making a lasting impact on residents across the state.
