Boost in Demand: Bharat Forge and Mahindra Urged to Accelerate Production of Munitions and Armored Carriers

Amid rising tensions with Pakistan, the Indian government is ramping up its defense capabilities. They’re working closely with private defense manufacturers to boost the supply of vital military equipment and ammunition.

Companies like Bharat Forge and Mahindra’s defense division have been asked to increase their production. This effort focuses on specialized ammunition, particularly for anti-drone systems and smart weapons. The government is also looking to enhance its armored vehicle fleet, incorporating advanced weapon systems like guided missiles and loitering munitions.

Bharat Forge, located near Pune, is crucial to this initiative. They specialize in a variety of defense technologies, including the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS). This innovative artillery system can fire at an impressive range of 48 kilometers, showcasing better mobility and firing rates than older models.

Mahindra’s defense division is also key. They produce both armored and non-armored vehicles for the Indian Army, like the Marksman and Rakshak. Their involvement supports India’s “Make in India” initiative, which has significantly increased domestic defense production—from heavy reliance on imports just a decade ago to about 65% of equipment now being manufactured within India.

This growing partnership is reshaping the defense landscape. According to recent data, private companies now account for about 21% of India’s defense output. The shift toward domestic production contributes to a robust ecosystem involving licensed companies and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

As these developments unfold, it’s evident that India is committed to fortifying its military capabilities with a blend of innovation and local production. Engaging the expertise of these private firms is a strategic move aimed at not just immediate needs but also long-term security.
