The University of Hawaiʻi is stepping up to help small business owners in the islands protect themselves from cyber threats. They’re launching a series of free online workshops focusing on “cyber hygiene.”
The first session, titled “Introduction to Cybersecurity: Cyber Hygiene,” is happening on January 21 from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom. These sessions are crucial because cybercriminals often target small businesses, thinking they have fewer resources to defend themselves.
Professor Debasis Bhattacharya, who is leading the workshop, explains that “cyber hygiene” is much like maintaining personal health. It’s all about the regular habits that keep your digital life safe.
What You’ll Learn
The introductory session will cover essential topics like:
- Strong password practices and multi-factor authentication
- Keeping software updated
- Backing up data and recovery plans
- Employee training on security awareness
- Securing networks and devices
- Developing access controls and incident response plans
You don’t need a technical background—just a basic understanding of the internet.
Why It Matters
According to a recent report from Cybersecurity Ventures, small businesses make up 43% of all cyberattack targets. Many are unprepared, which is a significant risk. In fact, 60% of small companies go out of business within six months after a cyberattack. The stakes are high, and knowledge is power.
This initiative is made possible through a $1 million grant from Google’s Cybersecurity Clinics Fund. The University of Hawaiʻi Cybersecurity Clinic is one of just 15 across the country aiming to help small businesses get better educated on these critical issues.
