Why Staying Active Matters at Any Age
Research shows that being active can greatly improve health and longevity. A major review of 85 studies indicates that adults who maintain a physically active lifestyle reduce their risk of dying from various causes, particularly heart disease. Those who remain consistent in their activity can lower their risk by 30-40%. Even if you start exercising later in life, you can still cut your risk of death by 20-25%. This means it’s never too late to get moving.
Experts recommend adults aim for 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week—or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity. This can also be a mix of both. However, many studies often assess physical activity just once, which might miss changes throughout a person’s life.
To dig deeper, researchers examined activity patterns over time. They analyzed studies that looked at physical activity at different points in adult life. The review included data from nearly 6.6 million participants. They found that those who were consistently active had a much lower risk of death overall. If someone increased their activity levels from being inactive, they reduced their death risk even more.
For instance, moving from a sedentary lifestyle to becoming active made a person 22% less likely to die from any cause. Increasing leisure-time activities led to a 27% reduction. However, if someone shifts from being active to inactive, it doesn’t appear to help their health at all.
Interestingly, the benefits of exercise were more pronounced for heart disease than for cancer. People who were consistently active were 40% less likely to die from heart disease compared to those who remained inactive. For cancer, the number was lower at 25%.
While the study provides compelling evidence that regular physical activity is key to a healthier life, it’s important to note a few limitations. Many of the included studies relied on people’s self-reports of their activity, which may not always be accurate.
Despite these limitations, the overall message is clear: whether you are a seasoned athlete or just starting to move, staying active is crucial for your health at any age. Even small amounts of exercise can lead to significant health benefits. So, a little bit is always better than none.
