The Family Resource Centre is hosting a vital mental health conference in Vernon on May 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free event, titled "Supporting Yourself in Uncertain Times," aims to equip participants with practical tools for managing their mental health during challenging periods.
The conference features a keynote address by Susan Armstrong, who will discuss "Understanding Our Automatic Responses to Stress and How to Unwind Them." Additionally, Jim Swingle, the executive director of the Family Resource Centre, will share insights about how our environment impacts mental well-being in his talk, "Your Environment Matters: Supporting Your Mental Health."
Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in two engaging workshops. Carole Fawcett, a writer and seniors’ activist, will explore "The Science of Laughter," highlighting the therapeutic benefits of humor. Gabe Newman will lead a session on "Being a Well-Resourced Caregiver: Managing Your Needs While Caring for Others," addressing the importance of self-care in caregiving roles.
Armstrong emphasizes the need for community support: “Canadians are reaffirming our commitment to pride and independence. This gathering is designed to equip individuals and families with tools and mindsets to navigate life in healthy, self-affirming ways.”
According to a recent survey by the Canadian Mental Health Association, nearly 60% of Canadians reported increased anxiety and stress due to uncertainties in their lives. Events like this conference are crucial in providing support and guidance.
