A student senator at Wichita State University is advocating for clearer access to health services. Josh Mallard, representing the Liberal Arts and Sciences, introduced a resolution on February 11. He wants a “student health” header added to the Student Tools section on myWSU, as currently, there’s no easy way to find Health Services from the homepage.
“If students need health services, they shouldn’t have to go searching for them,” Mallard said. “Making it visible helps everyone know their options.”
The proposed header could feature essential links like the tuberculosis screening survey, the myShockerhealth portal, and after-hours medical resources. Although SGA resolutions are just suggestions to the university, they reflect the views of the student body.
Mallard has already discussed this with the Student Health Services director for her input. The resolution is now with the Student Services Committee, where it may undergo revisions before returning to the senate for a vote.
Engaging students is crucial. They can voice their opinions at the weekly Student Senate meetings held on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. in room 233 of the Rhatigan Student Center. There’s also an opportunity to catch up on the discussions through a recording of the meeting, available here. All meetings are streamed on the SGA’s YouTube channel.
Recent studies show that accessible health services significantly impact student well-being, with more than 60% of college students expressing difficulty in finding health care resources on campus. Making these resources easier to find might help reduce this issue.
Amid rising health challenges among students, discussions around improving access to health services are more important than ever. Ensuring students know where to turn for help can empower them to maintain their health and well-being.
