Starting April 28, the Mumbai Central–Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express will see an increase in capacity. The number of coaches will expand from 16 to 20, helping to tackle ongoing seat shortages as more passengers rely on this service.
Indian Railways made this change permanent due to high occupancy, originally implemented temporarily during peak travel times. Officials emphasized this decision reflects the strong demand they’ve observed since the train’s launch.
The route covers 491 kilometers and takes about five and a half hours, with stops at Borivali, Vapi, Surat, and Vadodara. It serves a diverse mix of passengers, from business travelers to students and tourists.
Recent data highlights the growing popularity of the Vande Bharat trains. Currently, 162 services operate across India, with 38 featuring 20 coaches. Over the past year, passenger numbers surged, with nearly 40 million travelers using Vande Bharat services, marking a 34% increase compared to the previous financial year. Since their debut in 2019, these trains have transported over 91 million passengers.
Officials noted occupancy rates consistently exceed 100%, indicating the demand continues to outstrip capacity. The success of these trains can be attributed to faster journey times, improved schedules, and enhanced on-board amenities.
Features like the Kavach safety system, ergonomic seating, and onboard catering make the experience more comfortable. Additionally, there’s special attention to passengers with disabilities, ensuring they have access to necessary facilities.
This capacity boost is part of a larger strategy to meet the evolving travel needs of India. The Gandhinagar Capital–Mumbai Central route also provides a fast connection between Gujarat and Maharashtra, highlighting the importance of these services in supporting business and daily commutes.
