Boosting Environmental Collaboration: Egypt and Canada Unite for a Sustainable Green Transition and Climate Action

CAIRO – May 16, 2025: Egypt’s Environment Minister, Yasmine Fouad, recently met with Canada’s Ambassador to Egypt, Louis Dumas, to talk about ongoing and future collaborations on environmental issues. This friendly discussion reflects the strong ties that Egypt and Canada have built over the years.

Fouad praised Canada for its early support in enhancing Egypt’s environmental capabilities, especially in developing a data management system crucial for understanding environmental challenges. This partnership highlights how both countries have worked together at major events like the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Canada and the COP27 Climate Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh and COP28 in Dubai. Both nations focused on climate finance during these summits, resulting in significant agreements on funding.

One of the key topics discussed was Egypt’s vision for a green transformation. Fouad emphasized the importance of promoting green investments and encouraging private-sector involvement. She envisions Egypt as a leader in green hydrogen and renewable energy, utilizing its rich natural resources. This vision is supported by the government and local communities, aiming for an inclusive approach.

Fouad mentioned initiatives aimed at empowering youth and women in environmental projects. Since 2018, presidential directives have encouraged active participation beyond just raising awareness. Programs like the “Eco Egypt” campaign promote eco-tourism and involve young entrepreneurs in sustainable practices.

Plastic pollution was also a major concern during the meeting. Fouad detailed the government’s recent steps to tackle this issue, such as new regulations for plastic bags and a campaign to reduce single-use plastics. These efforts align with global themes on environmental awareness and aim to educate the public about reducing plastic waste.

Integration of environmental topics in education was another focus. Fouad noted that Egypt has already added biodiversity and climate change discussions into school curricula. She welcomed Canada’s interest in helping develop technical education that emphasizes sustainability.
