Consumers Energy Foundation has stepped up with a generous $250,000 grant to support the Food Bank Council of Michigan. This funding will help deliver food boxes to households with seniors, children, and those with disabilities.
The grant comes during a challenging time. Many Michiganders, over 1.6 million, are facing disruptions to their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This means reliable access to food has become a struggle for many families.
Brandon Hofmeister, president of the Consumers Energy Foundation, emphasized the necessity of this effort, stating, “We believe no one in Michigan should go hungry.” The foundation aims to ensure everyone has access to the nutrition they need.
The Food Bank Council will use the funding to launch a home delivery program, providing seven-day food boxes directly to those in need. Dr. Phil Knight, executive director of the Food Bank Council, called this support a “lifeline” for families, making it easier for those unable to reach food distribution sites.
This initiative is significant as food insecurity is a pressing issue in America. A recent study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture revealed that around 10.5% of households experienced food insecurity in 2021. Programs like this one are vital in addressing these challenges, ensuring people do not face hunger alone.
