Boosting Futures: How UCA Alumni Group’s New Book Empowers Scholarship Fundraising

The University of Central Arkansas Alumni Association has launched a delightful children’s book, “B Is for Bears: The UCA Alphabet.” This charming story takes young readers on a journey through the campus, guided by friendly mascots Bruce and Sugar.

The idea for this book came from Mary Lackey, UCA’s vice president for advancement. Alison Taylor, executive director of alumni relations and one of the authors, was immediately enthusiastic. As a mom of two young boys, she loves reading and sees this book as a perfect way to introduce kids to the magic of the UCA campus.

The book, priced at $19.95, will officially hit the shelves on August 5. Preorders are available at various retailers, and the proceeds will contribute to the Kathy Carroll General Alumni Scholarship fund, helping future students.

Riley Hancock Matheny, who contributed to both writing and illustrating the book, took on quite a challenge. With a busy graphic design job, she had to learn digital illustration techniques along the way. “I talked with my kids about how to make things relatable to their age,” she mentioned, noting their honest feedback helped shape the content.

Matheny wanted the illustrations to feel lively and connected to UCA’s environment. She incorporated textures from familiar campus elements, like the brick from Old Main and the flowers in the plaza gardens. This added depth and character to her designs.

A standout page dedicated to journalism honors Madison Ogle, a recent graduate. It showcases a bear with a press pass, symbolizing the storytelling abilities nurtured at UCA. Such connections highlight the importance of community and mentorship, making the book relatable to many.

While creating the book, the team faced challenges with certain letters. For example, “Q” stands for questions, a nod to the encouraging spirit of inquiry. “X” represents X-ray, relevant to UCA’s nursing and allied health programs.

Jennifer McCune, who served as the book’s editor, reflected on how meaningful it was for her. She has a personal connection to UCA, having attended with her mother and witnessing the growth of her family there. The Legacy Walk, made of bricks engraved with names of alumni, is a poignant reminder of the bonds formed on campus.

Overall, “B Is for Bears” is more than just a children’s book; it’s a celebration of UCA, its community, and its future. By engaging young kids from the start, it instills a sense of pride and anticipation for their educational journeys ahead.
