In Cairo, a top Indian delegation, led by Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar, is strengthening defense ties with Egypt. This group includes leaders from major Indian defense companies like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
The delegation met with key Egyptian defense officials, discussing ways to boost cooperation in defense production and technology. C. Sushma, Chargé d’Affaires at the Indian Embassy, and Group Captain Perminder Antil represented India in these discussions, highlighting the potential for collaboration between the two nations.
In a statement, the Indian Embassy noted the Egyptian side expressed appreciation for India’s advancements in defense manufacturing, especially regarding reliability and affordability. This meeting underscores the growing defense relationship between India and Egypt.
Historically, India and Egypt have maintained a strong defense partnership, which has gained traction in recent years. After resuming exchanges in June 2021, both countries have seen various defense delegations and military assets share visits.
Notably, during Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit in September 2022, a significant bilateral defense cooperation agreement was signed. This agreement marked a high point in their strategic partnership.
Joint military activities have further strengthened these ties. For instance, the Indian and Egyptian Air Forces conducted their first joint exercise, ‘Desert Warrior,’ in October 2021. In 2022, Indian Air Force jets took part in an Egyptian Tactical Leadership Programme, showcasing the collaborative spirit between the two nations.
In May 2023, another joint exercise took place at an Egyptian airbase, highlighting ongoing military collaboration. Additionally, India participated in the ‘Bright Star-2023’ exercise, organized by the U.S. Central Command and Egyptian Armed Forces.
Egypt also acts as a vital transit location for Indian military assets heading to and from Europe. Recent years have seen numerous Indian naval vessels and aircraft pass through Egypt for training and exercises.
As both countries work to deepen their defense relationships, experts believe that ongoing collaboration could bolster regional stability and enhance security. By focusing on joint exercises and exchanges, India and Egypt may create a stronger future partnership in defense.
