The Indian Army has taken a significant step by approving the procurement of the Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM). Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this missile signals a boost for India’s domestic military production.
By choosing this homegrown missile, the army aims to reduce dependence on foreign systems, like the older MILAN and Konkurs. The MPATGM is designed for India’s unique battlefield needs.
This third-generation weapon is known as a “fire-and-forget” system, making it an effective choice for infantry in various combat situations. Initially, it had an effective range of about 2 kilometers, but recent tests show it can hit targets from 200 meters to 4,000 meters. This allows soldiers to engage effectively in close-quarters combat, which is crucial for neutralizing modern tanks.
The addition of the MPATGM will enhance the military’s defenses against heavily armored vehicles during conflicts. Although some officials had concerns about its weight—around 14.5 kilograms for the missile and another 14.25 kilograms for the launch unit—the army concluded that its performance and advanced features outweigh these drawbacks.
Mass production of the missile will be managed by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). This ensures a stable supply chain, supporting local industries and aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative. This initiative emphasizes producing essential military technology domestically.
The MPATGM is equipped with a high-tech miniaturized Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker. This means it can lock onto targets in various conditions, whether it’s nighttime or poor visibility. Its fire-and-forget capability allows soldiers to fire and take cover, reducing their risk of return fire.
Additionally, the missile has a unique top-attack mode. This feature enables it to bypass thick armor and strike the vulnerable top of enemy tanks, enhancing both troop safety and effectiveness in modern warfare.
Recent surveys show that a significant number of military personnel believe that investing in indigenous weapons systems like the MPATGM will boost confidence both on the battlefield and within local manufacturing sectors.
