Boosting Leadership Skills: Concordia’s Hedstrom Takes on New Role at Alomere Health

ALEXANDRIA — Erik Hedstrom, a student at Concordia College, is diving deep into healthcare leadership this summer through an internship at Alomere Health. Under the guidance of CEO Carl Vaagenes, a fellow Concordia alum, Hedstrom is gaining hands-on experience in healthcare management.

His days are packed with activities. He attends executive meetings, assesses strategic contracts, and shadows staff across various departments. It’s a perfect blend of classroom knowledge and real-world application.

“Strong leaders don’t just give orders. They inspire others to achieve great things,” said Hedstrom, sharing insights he’s gained from observing the senior leadership team.

During his internship, he’s involved in several key projects. These include planning for physician recruitment and evaluating financial metrics. Hedstrom also participates in community events like Relay for Life, highlighting how vital local hospitals are to both healthcare and community engagement.

Carl Vaagenes cannot help but note Hedstrom’s unique qualities. “Erik has a calm, approachable nature. He connects well with everyone, from executives to staff,” he said. “He possesses natural leadership traits, making him a valuable team member.”

Hedstrom’s internship is part of Concordia College’s Healthcare Program at the Sanford Heimarck School of Health Professions. All students complete a rigorous 480-500 hour internship, engaging with projects that directly impact health systems in the region.
