The Indian government just announced a major move to bolster its shipping capabilities by signing a deal to create Bharat Container Shipping Line (BCSL). This initiative aims to develop a strong container manufacturing ecosystem in India, backed by a ₹10,000-crore investment plan over the next five years as outlined in the recent Union Budget.
The focus is on supporting the growth of containerized cargo, which constitutes about two-thirds of global trade value. This agreement represents a collaboration between key players in the shipping industry, including the Shipping Corporation of India and the Container Corporation of India, among others.
Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasized that the establishment of BCSL aims to ensure that India’s container trade is handled domestically. He believes this will enhance India’s position in global maritime trade.
Meanwhile, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned that this project pairs well with existing efforts in shipbuilding and maritime development. The goal is to ramp up local manufacturing of containers to about one million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) annually over the next decade.
In addition to BCSL, a separate agreement was signed for the Outer Harbour Project at VO Chidambaranar Port. This deal, worth up to ₹15,000 crore, highlights a commitment to expand port capacity under the Sagarmala Programme, which aims to modernize India’s coastline and enhance logistics infrastructure.
Recent statistics show that container shipping is not only vital for trade but also a major driver of economic growth. According to the World Bank, effective port management and infrastructure can increase a country’s GDP by up to 1.5%.
