Boosting National Security: Singtel Teams Up with DSTA and HTX to Revolutionize Defense Through Innovative Network Technology

Singtel, a major telecom company in Singapore, has teamed up with the Defense Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX). They announced this partnership on Monday to implement network slicing technology across the island, aimed at enhancing national security.

This new system uses Singtel’s advanced 5G tech to provide secure, high-speed connectivity tailored for defense and safety agencies. With network slicing, these agencies will have dedicated resources that can quickly respond to various situations, improving their ability to handle emergencies and detect threats.

As cyberattacks and other threats grow more sophisticated, this technology will help agencies integrate tools like autonomous vehicles and AI. They can analyze data faster and ensure first responders can make informed decisions in critical moments.

“Our nation’s security is crucial,” said Ng Tian Chong, CEO of Singtel Singapore. “The threat landscape is complex, and with our 5G network, security agencies can operate with precision critical for Singapore’s safety.”

This collaboration builds on a successful trial from last July. During this trial, they explored using 5G for video transmission and control of drones at Sentosa. It was supported by other agencies to test the 5G capabilities for real-world applications.

Wong Chia Sern, DSTA’s Director of Infocomm Infrastructure, emphasized the promise of 5G for defensive uses, highlighting its high bandwidth and low latency as key benefits.

Vincent Ho from HTX noted that stable connectivity is vital for the Home Team’s operations, especially as 5G use grows. The goal is to ensure that critical operations don’t slow down, even with a surge of network activity.

Singtel has been proactive in expanding its 5G network since achieving nationwide coverage in 2022. The company is working with both public and private sectors to explore security applications of this technology.

Additionally, to prepare for future challenges, Singtel has introduced Southeast Asia’s first national quantum-safe network, helping businesses adopt technologies to safeguard their assets. This supports Singapore’s aim to create a secure and advanced digital economy.
