In addition to the new funding, Alameda County had already set aside $10 million in emergency funds, primarily aimed at supporting food assistance. Out of that, $8.3 million is designated for the Alameda County Community Food Bank, with $1.7 million reserved for meals for seniors. New contributions from organizations like Crankstart, Eat.Learn.Play, and Oakland Thrives helped boost these efforts.
Approximately 179,000 residents, known as CalFresh recipients in California, are relying on these funds. However, uncertainty looms regarding when November benefits will be released, as a U.S. district judge has given the administration until Monday to clarify their funding plans.
Regi Young, the executive director of the Alameda County Community Food Bank, noted that while the new funding is welcome, it may take a month to reach local food banks. In the meantime, they are using their reserves to meet rising demands. “Food is a human right,” Supervisor Nikki Fortunato Bas asserted, reinforcing the urgency of the situation.
