Borderlands 4: Discover the Reasons Behind Its Mixed Reception on Steam

The highly anticipated game Borderlands 4 has launched for Windows PC, and it’ll soon be available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. Right out of the gate, it has attracted a large player base, with nearly 200,000 concurrent players on Steam.

However, the reception among players hasn’t been great. Just after its launch, Borderlands 4 dropped to a “Mostly Negative” rating on Steam but managed to climb to a “Mixed” score. Currently, only 49% of user reviews are positive, reflecting significant player dissatisfaction.

This reaction stands in stark contrast to critic reviews, where Borderlands 4 scored an impressive 84/100 on Metacritic, indicating generally favorable feedback. Critics praised the game but noted several issues that have contributed to its mixed reception among players.

Many players are voicing concerns about performance problems, especially on PC. Issues include low frame rates, crashes, and difficulties even getting the game to launch. One frustrated user took to Steam to share that none of their friends could even start the game without issues, suggesting that headaches were common for many players.

Notably, one review mentioned: “Terrible, terrible performance. Worst I’ve ever seen.” Players with powerful systems, like the RX 6900 XT, couldn’t even hit 60 FPS at lower settings. Another user called the game’s optimization “horrible” and had to refund it due to poor performance.

These complaints aren’t entirely surprising. There were already red flags regarding the game’s performance due to high system requirements and remarks from Gearbox’s CEO that suggested the game would be “unplayable” on underpowered systems. Historically, similar launches from big titles have seen backlash over performance issues, such as what happened with Cyberpunk 2077. This makes the recent experiences of Borderlands 4 players feel all too familiar.

Despite the technical issues, many agree that when it runs well, Borderlands 4 offers some of the best gameplay in the series. The controls, open-world design, and variety of characters and weapons have garnered praise. Players are eager for fixes so they can enjoy a gameplay experience that meets the anticipated hype.

As gamers, the hope is that developers will prioritize addressing these issues quickly. After all, a game that shows such promise deserves the chance to shine. For now, many players may choose to wait until these problems are resolved before diving into the action. In the meantime, players can find the PC version for about $60.69, giving a slight discount on the standard price.
