Boston University Women’s Basketball Welcomes Serena Through Team IMPACT: A New Chapter in Young Athletes’ Lives

Boston University’s women’s basketball team has a new addition. On October 29, they signed 10-year-old Serena through a program called Team IMPACT. Serena, who has cerebral palsy, will join the Terriers for games, practices, and other events over the next two years.

The signing ceremony took place at Boston University’s Eilberg Lounge, where teammates welcomed her with excitement. “Serena has already made such an impact on us,” said head coach Melissa Graves. “Her passion for the game and positive energy make her special.”

Team IMPACT is a nonprofit that connects children facing serious illnesses or disabilities with college athletic teams. This program has been running for over a decade and fosters deep bonds between athletes and kids, focusing on skills like socialization and resilience.

Since 2011, Team IMPACT has paired more than 4,000 children with over 750 colleges in all 50 states. This meaningful initiative has touched the lives of more than 75,000 student-athletes, proving that teamwork goes beyond sports.

While Serena’s journey is just beginning, her story is one of many showing how sports can empower. Programs like Team IMPACT highlight the importance of inclusion and support within the athletic community. By creating connections, they help young individuals build confidence and resilience.
