Boston University Women’s Track & Field Team Clinches Indoor Patriot League Championship: A Remarkable Victory!

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Boston University women’s track and field team celebrated a significant victory this weekend. They secured the Patriot League indoor track and field championship, marking their third win in the program’s history and the first since 2016. The championship took place at Navy’s Wesley A. Brown Field House on Sunday.

BU achieved a remarkable total of 166 points, the second-highest score ever recorded in the program. Navy came in second with 148.5 points, and Army West Point rounded out the top three with 139.5 points.

Coach Grant Cartwright was honored as coach of the year. Junior Peace Omonzane took home the title of field athlete of the meet, while fellow junior Vera Sjöberg was recognized as the track athlete of the meet and the top points scorer. Impressively, both achieved these honors for the second consecutive year.

On the final day of competition, the Terriers amassed three gold medals, one silver, and one bronze for a total of 11 medals. This strong performance played a crucial role in their championship win.

Sjöberg excelled in the mile and 3,000m races, defending her titles and becoming the first athlete in history to win gold in the mile, 3,000m, and 5,000m at the indoor championships two years in a row. Her mile time of 4:40.71 not only secured her victory but also broke the meet record previously held by Terrier Monica Adler since 2014.

Omonzane dominated the triple jump, achieving her second consecutive title in this event. She made history as the first Terrier to win both horizontal jump events in back-to-back years since Lovie Burleson in 2016 and 2017. The Terriers swept the podium in triple jump, with senior Emma Lawrence earning the silver and senior Jamie Chamberlain taking the bronze.

Freshman Iman Roka also contributed to BU’s success by securing a bronze in the 60m hurdles, while senior Asia Hamilton tied for third in the high jump, adding another bronze medal to the team’s collection.

In addition to their medalists, several athletes scored crucial points. Junior Jada Smith finished fourth in the 60m final, gaining valuable points, while junior Merem Gabriel-Rodriguez and freshman Caroline Collins both placed fifth in their respective events. The 4x400m relay team of Smith, junior Ijeoma Ezechukwu, and freshmen Alexis Caggiano and Kendall Barnhart secured a fourth-place finish, further boosting the team’s total points.

• Nakouzi’s shot put mark of 14.73 meters is a personal best and ranks her third all-time in the event.
• Roan set a personal best in shot put with a throw of 14.68 meters, improving her fourth-best mark in BU history.
• Lawrence made it onto the top 10 list with a triple jump of 12.30m, securing seventh place at BU.
